I recently saw the full length movie Superman Doomsday (the animated movie) where Superman dies?

I thought that in the comic book he was actually dead, but in the movie they do this whole thing where he ends up surviving and does battle with a clone of himself and wins. I never read the comic book version. The rest of the movie is loosely inspired by the series of comics that came after a three-month hiatus, where four new Supermen appeared (Steel, a Kryptonian cyborg Superman, a juvenile clone of Superman, and an energy power using alien claiming to have Superman's memories), and it seemed that DC was planning on making whatever one became most popular be the new Superman. Ultimately, none of them got much support, and in the story where all four were trying to convince everyone that they were the real Superman (or at least worthy of picking up his mantle), the Real Superman, through a fluke in how one of the others came to pretend to be Superman, was able to regenerate, albeit in a weakened state similar to what is shown in the Doomsday movie.
