Does the Superman symbol mean something else?In the original Superman movie with Christopher Reeves, his father has the Superman symbol on his chest, why?At various points in the Mythology/Canon of the DC Universe, the \S/ has had multiple meanings beyond Superman.
When the writer's created it I'm sure they simply figured 'His name is Superman, the \S/ means Superman.
But when his arrival was modified to Lois choosing the name for him w/in Canon, the writers needed to explain why he'd have the logo before the name, and it has since been rewritten that it is a Kryptonian/Kryptonese word/glyph/pictogram, that translates as either The El Family name/crest (not unlike a Medieval Coat of Arms), the word Hope, or National symbol (think the Union Jack for UK, or Maple Leaf for Canada)
as of 2005's Birthright (which I believe is the new Canon), it Means Hope), but at the time of the 1978 film it was the Family CrestIn the original Superman movie with Christopher Reeves, his father has the Superman symbol on his chest, why?
he and his father came from the planet krypton which was full of superhumans, but krypton was destroyed and superman was the only one who survived after his father sent him to earth. In the original Superman movie with Christopher Reeves, his father has the Superman symbol on his chest, why?I think the symbol is sort of a family crest, a family symbol of sorts. It could not have meant 'superman' because he did not get that name until he came to earth. It was a human who named him superman. And it could not have meant anything 'super' for the rest of the Kryptonians because they all had the same powers. It was normal for them so there would be no need to make a big deal out of it by setting it off in letters on the chest.

It was never really explained in detail in the movie, but I believe that S is their family crest, similar to a coat of arms in medieval times. Each family had a different symbol. Even though the S can stand for Superman, I believe that crest was placed in his spacecraft in order for him to remember his family. In the original Superman movie with Christopher Reeves, his father has the Superman symbol on his chest, why?It was a sort of family symbol or crest that signified Jor-el's family. On Krypton, though the civilization was far more advanced than that of Earth, they didn't have super powers, but due to the planet's size, gravitational pull etc., Earth's atmosphere endowed him with super powers. The crest was put in the pod by Jor-el along with some artifacts so that Kal-el would be able to know where he came from when he came of age.In the original Superman movie with Christopher Reeves, his father has the Superman symbol on his chest, why?
As already said, it is a family crest, If you watch the movie I think all the other people had their own family crest too.(I can't be sure because I haven't watched it in a while).
