Why is Superman's hair and facial hair not indestructible?

If it was, he would never be able to shave or get a hair cut. And don't say it doesn't grow. He had a mullet when he came back from the dead. When John Byrne revised the character in 1986 he explained that Superman used his heat vision reflected in a mirror to burn away beard stubble and hair growth. Presumably this would also apply to finger nails and toe nails.Why is Superman's hair and facial hair not indestructible?Its probably something they looked past.
